Benefits to healthy eating – Improves Mood

Posted by Danny

You know that healthy habits make sense, but did you ever stop to think why you practice them? Research shows that the impact of good health on your quality of life is far-reaching, regardless of your age, sex, or physical ability.

Improves Mood
Doing right by your body pays off for your mind as well. The Mayo Clinic notes that physical activity stimulates brain chemicals that often leave you feeling both happier and more relaxed. Eating a healthy diet as well as exercising can lead to a better physique, so you may also feel better about your appearance, which can boost your confidence and self-esteem. The American Council on Exercise reports that the short-term results of exercise include decreased stress and ability to think better.

It’s not just diet and exercise that lead to improved mood. According to a study published in the American Journal of Health Behaviour, another healthy habit that leads to better mental health is making social connections. Whether it’s volunteering, joining a club, or attending a movie, communal activities help improve mood and mental functioning by keeping the mind active and serotonin levels balanced, says the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Benefits to healthy eating – Combats Diseases

Posted by Danny

Healthy habits can help prevent certain health conditions–such as heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure–by boosting high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good,” cholesterol and decreasing unhealthy triglycerides. This combination keeps your blood flowing smoothly, decreasing your risk of cardiovascular diseases.

The Mayo Clinic says that regular physical activity and proper diet can help you prevent or manage a wide range of other health problems, including metabolic syndrome, diabetes, depression, certain types of cancer, and arthritis.

Benefits to healthy eating – Boosts Energy

Boosts Energy
We’ve all experienced the energy drop that comes from eating foods high in sugar and saturated fats. When you eat a balanced diet including whole grains, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and fruits and vegetables, your body has the fuel that it needs to manage your energy level.

Regular physical exercise also improves muscle strength and boosts endurance, giving you more energy, says the Mayo Clinic. Exercise helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and gets your cardiovascular system working more efficiently so that you have more energy to go about your daily activities.

It also helps boost energy by promoting better sleep–helping you fall asleep faster and deepening your sleep.

Sleep tight!

Benefits to healthy eating – Weight Control

Posted by Danny

You know that healthy habits make sense, but did you ever stop to think why you practice them? Research shows that the impact of good health on your quality of life is far-reaching, regardless of your age, sex, or physical ability.

Controls Weight

Eating right and exercising regularly can help you avoid excess weight gain and maintain a healthy weight. According to the Mayo Clinic, you can obtain benefits of exercise by being active in simple ways throughout the day. For example, walk instead of driving vehicle or take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Eating a low-fat diet can also help control weight. When you start the day with a healthy breakfast, you help avoid hunger spasms that could send you running to the fast food before lunch, says the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

The ADA also recommends incorporating at least five times per day of fruits and vegetables–which are low in calories and high in nutrients–in to your diet to help with weight control (although the actual figure seems to be closer to 15 times per day and a water intake of around 4 litres a day).

Childhood Obesity – Who is To Blame For Childhood Obesity?

Posted by Danny

obese-child-300x180

Chidhood Obesity is a topic you’ve probably heard talked about many times over the past few years and it will continue to be a hot topic until something drastically changes! Who is to blame for this epidemic of obese kids? The parents? The government? The kids themselves? This is a really interesting topic which I’m going to discuss in this post.

There are several reasons for writing this post, some of which are linked to the work I do as a Peak Performance Expert but the main reason is because of what I witnessed whilst on holiday in Spain recently… I was relaxing by the pool enjoying some quality rest and relaxation and I started to notice a common trend in an awful lot of the holiday makers, both in the kids and the parents… Obesity!

After a while this really started to wind me up! I was looking at the kids thinking “this is criminal!” Kids will generally eat whats put in front of them… How are there so many kids that are not just overweight but morbidly obese? In at least 95% of the cases I witnessed the parents were also obese as well… That’s were education starts to be a factor which I will touch upon later.

These kids were very young e.g. 5-7 year old boys and girls and many of them where easily 2-3 stone overweight and had “beer bellies” and “man boobs” – it was very sad to see what is happening all around us in the UK and the rest of the world.

I’ve been hearing for almost a decade now from other Health Experts, that this generation of kids growing up today are going to be the first generation that are outlived by their parents if things keep moving in the same direction they are going today! I’d believed this statement to an extent in the past but now I fully buy into it. It upsets me to say but Kids: Unless something changes soon, many of you WILL die before your parents!

Stop Sign

Unless eating habits change dramatically very soon, then this obesity epidemic will continue to spiral out of control.

When I was growing up, in my primary school there was only thin or lean children with the exceptional of one obese kid and when I speak to people of the age of say 20 upwards they also recall that in their school there was also very few or no obese kids at all.

I remember back to my packed lunches all through my school days (particularly in junior school), how I was often very jealous that my friends would have cookies, crisps and biscuits at break time everyday and I would only ever have an apple or banana at                                                                           break time and sandwiches on brown bread for lunch!

My brothers and I often thought we were deprived because we didn’t have the chocolate and biscuits at lunch breaks!  Looking back, I’m so glad that I was brought up with much healthier meals than many of my friends!  What happens when you’re a child will shape who you become as an adult so I would suspect my upbringing contributed to if not lead to me doing the work I do today as a Peak Performance Expert. Thank you mum and dad!

So when it comes down to it, kids need role models and they happen to be the parents in most cases… If the parents eat very unhealthy food that makes them fat then the same thing will ultimately happen to the kids… Of course food isn’t the only thing that contributes to poor health, if you’ve been following me for any length of time you’ll know I always say “eat well, move well and think well and you will be truly healthy!”

Right now we are talking about the eating well part of the health equation although of course exercise and mindset are also big factors that merit their own articles – watch this space! So I believe the parents are responsible for feeding the children nutritious food (or not as the case maybe!) and then the book really does stop with them. If their kids are unhealthy and overweight  due to the lifestyle they have learned from their parents, then there is something fundamentally wrong.EducationEarlier on I talked about part of the problem being a lack of education. It’s not necessarily that people need formal health and nutrition training, they just need expert guidance to help them make the right choices. Let me ask you a question, where did you learn about health and nutrition? Most people learn about health from the media: newspapers, magazines, TV and surfing the internet! There’s so much incorrect conflicting information out there that many people unknowingly make poor health choices thinking that they are being healthy! Can you relate to that?

Although I do believe parents are ultimately responsible if their kids are obese, I do appreciate that it is a minefield out there trying to be healthy. There is so much bad information out there which I’m sure confuses many parents. With that said obesity in kids and adults is completely preventable by simple lifestyle changes. But to be fair ‘you don’t know what you don’t know!’ Kids won’t get good nutritional education from school or from the government or anything like that…

So parents, it’s time  to step up and learn more about making lifestyle changes in yourself and your kids so that you kids will outlive you rather than the other way round!

If you would like some more information on making some simple life saving health choices then be sure to contact me on the contact form and I’d be happy to help.

Peak Performance Coaching – Why I Created Ultimate Performance Formula

Posted by Danny

I’ve been studying the human body and human performance for over half of my life now and teaching these principles to my patients for close to 10 years now. I’m about to turn 34 later this month so you can see I’ve been in this game for quite some time! How many hours does it take to become an expert at something? 10,000 hours is what the research and the statistics say, I think I’ve got that one covered don’t you?

I regularly speak to lot’s of business owners and entrepreneurs and something that comes up all the time is “If only I had more energy, then I would be able to do what’s necessary to take my business to the next level.” As well as this, in my Chiropractic practice one of the most common signs or symptoms people tick on the Health Questionnaire is “fatigue and tiredness.” So there is a pandemic of tiredness and lack of energy in our society whether it be in the business owner, entrepreneur or Joe Public!

The way I see it, somebody had to step up and help business owners and entrepreneurs learn simple strategies so they can get loads more energy enabling them to transform their life and business! Nobody else teaches this stuff the way I do so I decided to fill this gap in the marketplace. Good health

I’ve been teaching the principles of the Ultimate Performance Formula (UPF) to my patients for many years (although I didn’t call it that at the time). The unique framework of UPF addresses physical, chemical and emotional imbalances in your life, more specifically teaching you how to get the highest amount of energy, vitality and performance from your body by Eating, Moving and Thinking Well.

As a business owsmoothyner how much impact do you think the food you put into  your mouth has on your energy, vitality and ultimately your health? The answer I’m sure you’ll agree is a BIG IMPACT! Yes nutrition or lack of it has a huge impact on every part of our being and will affect how we think and funnily enough how we move as well…

Okay, so what about your exercise regime or lack of it, what impact does that have on your health and the health of your business? On days or even weeks when you choose not to exercise you will have noticeFitnessd decreased energy levels and it follows that decreased energy levels lead to less productivity in your business which will therefore then lead to a reduction in profits which nobody wants… This is based on both my experience and on the experience of my coaching clients. If you already exercise frequently, then I’m sure you can relate to this, your mind just doesn’t function at it’s best if when you don’t exercise does it?

The other key component to balance is your emotions i.e. Thinking Well. The mind-body connection is well established in the personal development space, in my experience not so much in the general public though! It’s now scientifically proven that what happens in your mind affects your body and like wise what happens in your body will have an impact on your state of mind!

When I speak about this in my seminaRelaxationrs and workshops there is sometimes somebody who questions whether this is the case so this is one way I answer their question or statement:

“Do you remember a time when you were nervous or anxious, perhaps waiting to go into an exam in school or college and you hadn’t studied for the test? If not yourself, no doubt you will have known somebody who was nervous and worried in that situation. Okay, so one minute they were thinking about the test and then suddenly they needed to go to the toilet urgently, either to vomit or otherwise. They didn’t feel unwell before worrying about the exam but the stress and worry in their head affected their body proving the intimate connection between the body and mind. Does that make sense to you now?” Inevitably it does…

So Ultimate Performance Formula addresses the whole picture and not just individual parts, you’ve got to Eat Well, Move Well and Think Well if you intend to perform at your peak throughout your life! By analyzing your lifestyle and then addressing the weaknesses in your nutrition, exercise regime and mindset, this has a profound positive impact on your energy levels and your performance both personally and in your business!

Easy Tips For Healthy Blood Sugar Levels

Posted by Danny

By Dr Christiane Northrup

Blood sugar imbalances are linked with many symptoms and health issues, including type II diabetes, fatigue, weight gain and unstable mood s.

Type-2 diabetes has risen dramatically in recent years and one of the reasons for this is because the range for normal blood sugar is too high. This would go some way to explain why so many people have symptoms, like weight gain, unexplained fatigue and excessive thirst for years before they are diagnosed. So whats the solution to this problem? How do we balance our bodies blood sugar levels?

Here Are Some Useful Tips For Promoting Healthy Blood Sugar Levels:

 1. Focus On Including Protein At Breakfast

If you’re only going to do one thing, then make sure to eat some protein at breakfast every morning. Aim for at least 10 gms. If you’re in a rush, then a low-glycemic shake with protein (or even a high-protein nutrition bar) is a good start. When you get protein first thing in the morning, it sets you up for “normal” blood sugar for the rest of the day.

Some other ideas for a protein breakfast include: porridge with mixed seeds (flaxseed, pumpkin, linseed etc…) eggs (poached, scrambled, fried or in an omelette), a nut milk smoothie with berries and hemp seeds, fish, sprouted bread with nut butter, grilled tempeh, and leafy greens – sauteed or in a smoothie.

 2. Know That Blood Sugar Response Is Quite Individual!

I learned that we all react so differently to the same foods. For example, some so-called “healthy” foods, like whole grains, actually spike blood sugar in some individuals, but not in others. Similarly, watch out for fructose (sugar fruit). In many individuals, fructose will spike blood sugar, whereas whole fruit will not—even though whole fruit contains fructose.

Hint: If there’s a dish that you like so much you could eat it all the time and in large quantities, chances are really good that it’s spiking your blood sugar.

3. Eliminate Wheat

The book, Wheat Belly, by William Davis, M.D. is a treatise on how the kind of gluten found in the mono-culture wheat we grow in the United States is often metabolized in the body just like sugar! So if you want to really get serious about your blood sugar, I suggest that you stay away from grains completely for atleast a month or two.

4. Check Your Stress Levels

If you’re eating well, but under a lot of emotional stress, it may cause high blood sugar. You might also notice that you’re putting on weight. Since stress releases cortisol, and cortisol spikes blood sugar, you will find that undue emotional stress will spike your blood sugar. This also explains why coffee on an empty stomach can spike blood sugar. The caffeine causes the body to release cortisol.

5. Consider Supplements

If your blood sugar is higher than the ideal numbers I mention above, there are supplements you can take that really help control blood sugar while you’re upgrading your diet. Green coffee extract and Gymnema sylvestreare are two good options.

6. Make Friends With Stevia

Stevia is an herb that is very sweet. I carry Nu-Naturals liquid stevia with me wherever I go. (With the exception of Truvia, the other brands don’t hold a candle to Nu-Naturals and are often bitter.) I use stevia in my iced tea, in my coffee, and to add a little extra sweetness to berries and fruit or to plain kefir.

7. Exercise To Burn Off Excess Cortisol

When you are stressed, the excess cortisol produced by the body is designed to help you run away from the threat! When there were tigers to run from, the body used the cortisol to flee. The problem is that, today, our stresses are not the kind you can run away from. So instead of running from the tiger, do ten minutes of exercise. In an office building, you can walk up and down stairs or up and down the halls. You will be amazed at how effectively this quells the urge to reach for a candy bar or a donut.

8. Stop Dieting!

If you’re going to eat sugar, just be sure to eat some protein and add lots of salad, green vegetables, beans, and other low glycemic foods to the mix. This will go a long way toward keeping blood sugar even. As an added bonus, over time, those with the stable blood sugar are the ones who lose their excess belly fat, too!

I know this topic isn’t particularly sexy. And I know these changes require commitment and discipline, which isn’t too appealing. But following this prescription is true preventive medicine. And incorporating even half of these tips will help you set the stage for better health on many levels.

7 Reasons To Love Beets – Add Them To Your Fresh Juices Today!

Reasons To Love Beets

I just found this article on foodmatters.tv website and really liked it so thought I would repost it here! I think you’ll find it very useful. Enjoy guys!

By Michelle Schoffro Cook, Care2

Beets are delicious and nutritious powerhouses.  Here are 7 healthful reasons to love beets.

1.  Lower Blood Pressure (when high)

A recent study at London’s Queen Mary University found that one glass of beet juice daily was more effective at lowering high blood pressure than medication.  Of course, this doesn’t mean you should stop taking medication if you have high blood pressure. But, it does mean that adding a cup of beet juice and more beets to your diet could be helpful in the treatment of high blood pressure, angina and heart disease.

2.  Increase Exercise Endurance
A study at England’s University of Exeter found that eating foods rich in naturally-occurring nitrates, like beets, improved endurance during exercise.  The scientists studied various substances and training methods to see which, if any, would improve stamina.  Beet juice had the greatest effect, improving peoples’ ability to exercise for 16% longer than without it, without tiring.

Naturally-occurring nitrates have been shown to widen blood vessels and allow more oxygen-rich blood to travel to the heart.

3.  Anti-Inflammatory
Raw beets or raw beet juice contain betaine, a natural anti-inflammatory that helps protect against aging and disease.

4.  Anti-Cancer Effects

The phytonutrient, proanthocyanidin, that gives beets their rich purplish color is also a potent anti-cancer compound.  Meanwhile the fiber found in beets also helps protect against cancer.  This particular fiber increases the body’s ability to detect and remove abnormal cells in the body before they can become cancerous.

5.  Immunity Booster
Beets are high in vitamin C, which boosts the immune system.

6.  Reduce The Risk Of Birth Defects

Beets are high in the B-complex vitamin folate which when consumed by pregnant women have been shown in many studies to reduce the risk of birth defects in the baby.

7.  Rich In Essential Minerals

Beets are also high in the minerals manganese and potassium.  Manganese is required for healthy bones, liver, kidneys, and pancreas.  Potassium helps ensure healthy nerve and muscle function.

How Are Beets Best Enjoyed?

  • You can use cooked beets in soups and stews.  I love steamed beets tossed with a little flax oil (don’t cook the flax oil though) and sea salt.
  • They can be enjoyed sliced or grated, raw, in salads.
  • They can be juiced. For Free Health Consultation Contact me Now
  • They can be steamed and pureed.
  • The juice be used as a natural pink food coloring.

High Performance Advice – Does Coke Give You Energy?

Posted by Danny

What makes people achieve peak performance is a topic that I am always studying and researching find ways to improve my clients and my own performance! It may surprise you but lots of people ask me the question “can’t I just drink coke that will gives me energy won’t it?”

That’s a good place to start then…

Peak Performance Expert ConsultantLots of people drink Coca-Cola because they think it will give them more energy and this is definitely not the case. How many people do you know drink coke? Do your kids drink it or do you drink it yourself?

Because of all the sugar in coca-cola it will give you a massive short lived sugar rush and synthetic boost of energy followed by a crash. This causes the stress response in your body everytime you drink it. In fact many other foods, drinks and substances regularly cause the stress response in your body and they will be addressed in future articles.

The stress response is the ‘Fight or Flight’ response thats hard wired into our neurology designed to protect us. Thousands of years ago in the paeleolithic era (hunter gather times) the stress response was utilised so we can could either fight off an animal that attacked us or give us the adrenaline required to run away to safety.

Today we don’t have that danger but other things trigger off the stress response and in this instance we’re talking about coke. The stress response increases and speeds up most functions in your body.

Here’s just a few of a long list of things it does:

1. Increase Cortisol Levels

2. Increase Heart Rate

3. Increased Blood Pressure

4. Increase Blood sugar levels and chronicity leads to Diabetes

5. Increase feelings of Stress, fear , anxiety, depression

6. Decreased ability to learn and concentrate

7. Poor short-term memory

8. Increased sensitivity to pain

9. Decreased Serotonin levels and increased Noradrenaline levels

10. Bone Loss and changes in connective tissues and muscle fibres.

Peak Performance Expert - Dr. Danny Scahill

They are just a few of the effects of the stress response on your body. So that short boost of ‘fake energy’ you get from coke is harming your body everytime you drink it. It is constantly and severely dehydrating your body, you really need to drink 3-4 litres of water per day and that will give you a big increase in your energy levels.

Interesting and Disturbing Facts about Coke

  • Many police cars in USA carry a couple of gallons of coke to remove blood off the highways after road traffic accidents!
  • If you put a steak in a bowl of coca-cola it will be gone in 2 days!
  • Very good for cleaning toilets! Pour a can into the toilet and leave it for 1 hour and then flush and stains will have disappeared!
  • Clears corrosin from car battery terminals
  • Loosen rusted bolt by applying a cloth soaked in coke to the rusted bolt!
  • Removes grease from clothes. Add a can of coke into the load before adding detergent and running the cycle.

If coke does this to all of the above, what is it doing to your insides?

If you still want to drink coke and allow your kids to drink it after reading this then I have to ask you, do you care about your health and the health of your children?

Please share this article with people because I’m sure lot’s of people don’t yet know this information! People generally know that coke is bad for them but do they really understand what it’s doing to their bodies?

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this article and found it useful! If you’ve any questions for me then leave a comment and I will respond promptly.
